Description:

This painting was created in 1942. This watercolor was painted by Karol Kossak during his several-year stay in the Hutsul region at the turn of the 1930s and 1940s and depicts a winter scene with a horse motif typical of that period. During this period, the artist experienced great fascination with the Hutsul region and the landscape of the Eastern Carpathians with characteristic Orthodox churches, huts and crosses, painting beautiful watercolors with subtle colors.
Watercolor titled "Departure in Winter" depicting a genre winter scene. In the foreground there is a man in a Hutsul costume - a typical vest with a sheepskin coat, riding a Hutsul horse (chestnut). This man rides his horse out of his pen and leads a gray horse carrying luggage on its back. In the background you can see typical wooden Hutsul huts covered with snow.



The painting is behind glass, framed in a passe-partout.

Karol Kossak (1896-1975) – painter, drawer and illustrator – son of Stefan, nephew of the painter Wojciech, cousin of Jerzy and grandson of Juliusz Kossak. In accordance with family preferences and tradition, he painted mainly scenes with horse motifs - riders, vehicles, sleigh rides and hunting scenes. He graduated from high school in Lviv and there he took his first drawing and painting lessons with Zygmunt Rozwadowski and Stanisław Kaczor-Batowski. In the years 1919-1923 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków under Ignacy Pieńkowski and Władysław Jarocki. He also benefited from the advice of his uncle Wojciech. He painted primarily in watercolor. From 1950 he was a member of ZPAP.
